Hello everyone!
My name is Matty and I'm moving to Finland with my beautiful wife of 8 years in a few months. I will be bringing my 99 buell m2 chopper with me to keep me sane. As part of the deal with my wife for uprooting myself and moving to a new place where I don't speak the language. I've had good luck talking with a lot of people from Finland with English! Sorry I don't read or understand much Finnish yet, but I'm working hard on it and hope to take some language classes once we are situated in Kuopio.
A little background on myself.....I'm 27 and love anything with wheels and a loud fast motor! I love choppers most of all though. I'm hoping to build myself a nice Triumph long chopper in the classic 70's style. I like them so 70's you get a little contact buzz!
I'm looking forward to moving and getting into some metal fabrication schools and becoming a finnish citizen! I'm a pretty laid back guy and love making new riding and wrenching buddies. I'm planning on importing some vintage parts and already working with a forum member to bring in some goodies! If you are in or around Kuopio ( Siilinjärvi) message me and maybe we can ride together and have some drinks!! here is pictures of my choppa! (http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp347/mills14_bucket/IMG_20120925_173056.jpg)(http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp347/mills14_bucket/IMG_20120925_173215.jpg)
thanks!
and again sorry for my lack of finnish
Matty Mills
Welcome to Finland (even though I´m in Japan currently) and Finnbikers forum Matty.
You have very nice Buell chopper. I hope you get registration plate on that from Finland.
Don't worry about your Finnish skills, your moving to Kuopio, they don't speak there Finnish either ;D
They have own beautiful dialect.
But anyway, nice to have something different to this forum. Keep on posting here your journey in Finland.
Welcome to Finland Matty and hope everything goes well in your moving. If you ever find yourself near Ylivieska, message me. Allways have bed, food, beer and sauna ready;-) Nice chopper you have, boys in clubhouse sure like to see it.
Welcome indeed!
A rather exotic Buell You have... Although it does not meet the modern, exhaustive Chopper Standards in Tuusula ;D, I may have some ideas just how to legally register it in Finland despite the massive bureaucracy and flood of rules. Some modifications are required in any case, but the idea is to keep them as little as possible.
As we already briefly discussed on Facebook, you might run into some issues since your bike is titled as Buell - yet it doesn't have much left of the original bike. But as they say - "where there's a will, there's a way". In this case, most likely it will be enough that your bike has been registered as it is in US - you will have to add stuff like front brake, turn signals and some kind of muffler but nothing you won't be able to accomplish.
So you say you're going to move here in few months? Are you shipping the bike before you leave so it'll be here sometime beginning of 2013? You might want to start the registration process as soon as possible in order to be able to ride next summer.
There is also option of bringing the bike here as a "tourist vehicle" - meaning that your permanent residence is outside of Finland. Then you could ride it here with US plates for six months within a 12 month period. That way you'd have time to figure out the registration process and not miss riding next summer.
But anything you need to know, don't hesitate to ask. I just got off the phone with the fellow who replied to you above, "Tuusulan T-Bone", and we'd be happy to help you with the process.
I'm glad you all like my Buell, it doesn't get a lot of attention here because it's not a panhead or knucklehead or shovelhead.
;D Thanks to you for your help and advice on getting my bike into Finland. I really hope I can register it without too much headache. Like Hemuli and I talked about the the motor is the only thing that's buell about it. The bike was built by a shop here in the states to be a show bike {Ardcore choppers Its a Dirty game). I bought it and changed everything but the drivetrain and frame. New wheels, seat, fender brakes, bars, some wiring, tail light and its getting a new gas tank painted up by a really good painter here named Michael Geltz. He paint's for a lot of my buddy's with HEAVY and is cuttin me a good deal! I'm not much of a fabricator yet but I plan to attend some classes for metal working and machining.
Who should I contact in finland about the paperwork I will need? I do need to get working on that. The bike is going to be shipped pretty soon here. The cost isn't too bad it will be under 2000$ usd for me with customs fees and shipping from my home In iowa to the transport facility in nyc then to Finland. I will be keeping the bike at my Father in laws shop in kuopio till I can find an apartment with space or a house with garage. I'm bringing my basic hand tools and will need access to grinders and saws and a drill press!
I'm already very happy to have help and compliments with the process and I'm looking forward to living and riding in Finland with a new group of good people!
Thank you all for helping to ease my worry some!

Funny you mention that Triumph I was looking at it on Nettimoto haha.. I want a triumph long chop. Maybe someday soon!
Thanks for all the welcoming's I'm very excited to Move to finland! Looking forward to lots of riding and plenty of beers in the sauna!
Welcome to Finland and to Kuopio.
You should remember that the dialect of language in Kuopio is quiet funny to listen as Jarppi earlier mentioned.
Kuopio is nice city. And buell choppers are wanted bikes to this web site and to finland..
So many people have told me that Kuopio has a different dialect, I tease my wife because she says its kind of like having a southern drawl here in the USA if you live in the southern states! kinda hillbilly redneck hahaha!
I bet you gonna find out that living in Alabama is better than in Kuopio... ;D
Why so, I bet nobody knows about muikkukukko at Alabama ;D
Nr 1 take a way meal when you are on the road 8) Muikkukukko (bread filled with smoked fish)
All rednecks, floursleeves, strawhats and hillbillies love that kind of food .
Welcome to Finland :) Nice that you take your bike with.

When the smoked fish is temporary out of stock .. :-X
That does look kinda like Brains a little.. Delicious haha! I'm a zombie movie fan for sure! We don't get alot of fresh fish where I'm From in Iowa, But I'm looking forward to eating lots of Fresh Salmon!
Hah, I just bought a geg of beer and whole salmon! One question about your move from US to here - why?
Why not? Need a change and Life sounds great in Finland. The USA is headed downward with all the Political pandering to Big buisness greed. The presidential race this year is like a choice between a shit sammich and bid stupid douche!
I will miss my concealed weapons permit and learning finnish will be hard, but I believe a better life will be had for My wife and I and our future children.
If you are used to dark, cold, wet and snow for 6 months of the year that helps a lot. I am still not used to those :)
Luckily Finland's summer usually has little snowfall..
And I bet Iowans see plenty more snow than us here.
Well good luck to you sir, I hope you dont learn Finnish too fast and catch up with local yellow papers. Sorry to spoil but really, it's just same shit on different packet. Those eastern mosquitos will kill you, but I bet you have seen your share of those on Iowa. I have 1 imaginary (=internet) friend from Iowa and he is also insane. Hey ho!

Savustettu kala ei kyllä kuulu kalakukkoon millään tavalla, niin kuin sivuhuomautuksena ;D
Welcome,
I hope you dont get disappointed in here. The economy is going to sewer too, like in states. Some of the laws are pretty tight, especially bike building related.
Our last presidential election was a freakshow too.Our version of your republican vs. an enviromentalist gayman.
Enjoy your life in kalakukkolandia!
As you can see, Finns are also quite pessimistic. But don't worry, you'll get used to it. After a few months of sleet and darkness, you find yourself thinking as a native Finn :D
Welcome! ;D
Yeah, but the pessimistic dont get disappointed ;D
Here is a lot of good sides as well.
I agree less dissapointment when your a pessimist....And I know all the about the cold dark shitty winters here in Iowa it gets cold. Winter is just building season. thank you all for the welcomes!
Fun starts when the snow comes. :P
UPDATE:
Well my bikes are on the way to Finland now and We are trying to fly out on the 6th of December. I will Be in Finland very soon, I'm anxious to get setup and start working on my chopper with the help of this Forum and it's members! I did end up scoring another bike to bring with me to Finland, it's a 83ci shovelhead with 4spd trans in a drop seat Panhead frame with a custom 1984 motorcycle title. I just had the cylinders bored and installed new pistons and rings myself, so the top end is super fresh on it. It's pretty stock looking at the moment but that will change when I have time and money to do so.
Like I said in the first post on here I will be staying in Siilinjärvi for at least the first few months till we find our own place to stay. I'm very lucky and have made Friends with Sarge on this Forum. I will be storing/working on my bikes at his place in Tampere until I can find my own place or something closer is available.
If you will be close to my new Home in Siilinjärvi feel free to message me or email me at mills14@hotmail.com and maybe we can get together talk choppers and drink some beers!
Siilinjärvi is important place to me. My grandparents lived there and I have spent there my youth summers. Nowadays I spend at least two weeks there with my grandmother or with aunt. So it is nice place to me, but some time ago that place was chosen one the uggliest place in finland.
I know that there lives some members of this site. And i know that countryside of siilinjärvi is located plenty of empty garages and houses, but they are not in common sales or rent.
Strange world. .
Welcome to Finland and Kuopio!
If you are looking for wrenching buddies as you said, you're most welcome to stop by at my shop.
Im a big motorfreak myself besides its my job and hobby it's also my passion ;D Im sure we have lots to talk about! So once you've settled let's be in touch. Give me a message
I forgot to mension, i live in Kuopio. My email is eddie.preston@gmail.com
Well, I will Be in the country very soon, we had some problems with getting both our dogs on the plane flights, but we finally managed to get the tickets and I will for sure be in Finland on the 22nd of January. I should have my bikes back shortly after I arrive. And I have alot of work to do....see you all soon!
Well it's about time - wasn't the first scheduled date around Finnish independence day?

Well it's about time - wasn't the first scheduled date around Finnish independence day?
Yes, that was our original plan. I shipped my bikes to Texas with Fin-Us logistics in the end of November and they are being held there now and should ship sometime soon.
Our main problem was to try to arrange international flights for our two dogs, which was a huge pain in the ass. Then various problems like flight costs being super high around the holidays and The schedule of the people we are staying with to drive us across country to New York City from Iowa....
We leave Iowa Early in the morning on the 20th and start our trip to Nyc then a flight with Finnair straight to Helsinki. We are staying with some Family in Lahti overnight then driving to Kuopio the next day where we will be staying until we figure out Living situations and school. I will travel 9,000 km in three days. I'm very anxious and want to get back to working on my bikes and have them both ready to ride by spring.
We made it to Finland! I'am staying with My wife's family in southern Siilinjarvi. My bikes are on the way over now and should be here within a couple weeks! I will be glad to have them back and get to work on both of them before spring time! as I mentioned before if you are close by and would like to hang out and chat drop me a line at mills14@hotmail.com
I ordered a phone today and should have it next week so I can give out my new phone number!
Looking forward to meeting some like minded people here in my new home!
Well buddy, hope you like snow and cold weather 'cause there's plenty of that in Finland..Personally,I hate that shit. That's why I escaped to Florida for this winter. Had to spent week and a half in Finland in early January and hated every minute of it, good thing I was able to return to Florida. 73F and sunny. Have fun.
I'am originally from Iowa, so cold temps and snow are pretty normal for me. It actually gets much colder in Iowa in the winter and much hotter in the summer. the temps can go from -40f to 112f.
I have been to Florida once on a family trip. To hot and humid for me! And the winter is good time to work on the parts I broke during the summer.
Ok ! No broblems :) It seems that Siilinjärvi feel like home climate.
Just got of the phone with the shipping agent in Hameenlinna Teppo Hanninen, my bikes will be here next week! I'm very excited to get to work on them with help from my buddy on here Sarge aka Rikku. I should be blasting around Finland as soon as the roads are clear enough! hope to see you all out on the road soon! and If you see me out riding don't be afraid to stop and say hello! I will be starting my Finnish language courses next week hopefully!
Millsy
There is bike show coming soon.

Spring is here and It won't be long till I have both my bikes here with me In Kuopio.
